Youīre right, they are not pincompatible.
Like the guys said...
The 030 in your Falc is a 132 pin PLCC chip,
which is soldered on to the motherboard. :(
APPLE used 179 pin PGA 040īs in their Macīs.
(looks like a 486 chip, on both sides)
MC68040RC(V) has On-Chip Cache, MMU & FPU...
(V=3.3Volts, no V=5Volts) A nice chip indeed.
...BUT:
There IS a 040 with 132 pin PLCC case too,
but itīs an "embedded 040" (No MMU, No FPU)
I havenīt been able to find the pinout, but
it COULD as well be pincompatible with the 030?
Anyway, APPLE never used that one, and I have
never seen it elsewhere than at Motorolaīs site.
I was going to do the 030-040 swap myself, once.
I designed a liīl adaptor, and removed the 030
from the motherboard, using a pencil torch.
It was then, when I checked the solder pads with
a magnitude glass, I realised that the Atari Falcon
is a 16 bit machine. There was no connections to
the 030īs DATA BUS bits 16-31! (took some photos)
"NO WAY I gonna waste a 040 on THAT!", so I took a
68030/33MHZ from a MAC LC 450, and soldered it in.
There are one more option, though:
Moto once made a 68070! -Itīs a 16/32, with MMU and
2 DMAīs. Marked "35MHZ", so it should work up to
at least 50. Maybe this is the CPU they had in mind
when they designed the 16 bit Falcon? The UDS/LDS
signals needed, are available from the COMBEL,
pins 171/179... Moto donīt produce the 070 anymore,
and they have removed ALL info about it from their
site. Though you can still buy it from ELFA in Sweden. :)
