With Games, and graphics applications that need to be either fast, or very colorful, you are stumped and the humble Standard ST is just nmot going to be anywhere near a PC or console there.
But, for absolutely EVERYTHING else, Application software, and general Desktop use, the Humble ST, with the right software will be every bit as good as any effing PC can be.
With the "Really" right software, you will actually find that its faster than a fannying PC too!
For general Desktop use, I have found that the ST is far superior, and faster, to my Linux PC ( AMD 400 running at 600mhz ) and the only advantage the Linux Machine has over the ST, is the number of colours, and of course I can play MP3s, MODules and MidiFiles while I am working.
In terms of speed, well, Papyrus Office loads up in about 5 seconds on the ST, but Star Office takes nearly 2 minutes!!!
No, the ST is faster for General Desktop use than Linux, but of course, you need the right software, because as standard the ST is a tad shyte!
What I suggest, is the following:-
HD:
Dont give me any shit about 30MB... I cannot even get my boot up files into that! - My SwapDrive is 40MB!! - my C: Drive has 240MB on! - Get a SCSI Adapter and buy a 500MB Drive at least!
You will soon find you are filling it up, but unless you go sily, 500MB will still leave you with tons to spare if you ever need it.
NVDI - Dont ask stupid questions, just get it. You will treble the speed of your ST
MAGIC - Again, the fastest MultiTasking O/S there is. Geneva is not too shabby, and MiNT is also an option too, but forget them, and go for Magic.
These 2 on their own will make your ST run faster than a standard Falcon.
Jinnee - Replace the Desktop with what Windows wants to be when it grows up.
All of these, including the HD should not cost you much more than £100, and may likely be less.
