You are totally spot on with the Emulator stuff, they all do one thing, and that is to allow you to ply your old ST games, period!

GEMulator is slightly different in that it doesdo the ST, but it makes no pretences at being an ST Game type of emulator in that it tries to run as fast as possible, so in effect, you get a very, very fast ST.

Still ST though, but you can also use an extra VGA program that will let you chose other resolutions, such as 640x480x16 or 800x600x16 and even all the way up to 1600x1200, but still in 16 colours ( I have been working on 256 colours, but nothign solid just yet )

Nothing like a real machine?
No, I have to agree with you there... At the end of the day, the only possible way a PC can get as good as a real atari ( or clone to be fair ) is if you could runn 100% of the software, plug in 100% of the hardware, and it booted up with absolutely bugger all but TOS.

I think you could get away with it still being an x86, providing it emulated 100% of the 680x0 code too at a real speed.

Other than that, NO WAY can Emulation come close to a real machine.

USB / ISA / PCI

Oh yes, USB is certainly a good option, and we should of course try to accomodate it, but then, why not also try to use things like graphic cards, or sound cards to also get access to the amazingly cheap cards that are out there too?

They are not PC specific either..hang on, yes, ok, I suppose they are, but Atari clones also have them, and there are some drivers for some cards on the atari too! ( Just check out Wollers site ) and anyway, there is nothing that you cannot do with a machine with a PCI slot, because this is the gateway to such things as USB ( yes, you can get USB on PCI card, and ISA too ) so if you have the PCI slot, then if you also want USB, geta card... Nice and simple!

Its hard to know what to do, I think we all agree there.
