Yes, I agree, but Digitals translator was not a runtime thing. You just run the utility on the executable files and then you can run it on Alphas. Timing effects was/is not as issue in VAX executables. This is most likely a problem on ST Games/Demos ?
Alpha is still the king in performance, but Compaq has it's origin as a PC company and another problem is Alpha CPU's are only used in OpenVMS and Tru64 and to some small extent Linux and the BSD derivates.
I remember running the PC DOS games Grand Prix 2 in 1996/97 on an AlphaServer with runtime x86 emulation on OpenVMS and no Pentium PC could reach my frame rates :)
