Yes, FreMiNT 1.15.12, I downloaded again just a couple of days ago to make sure, and its the same as I have been using for a short while now.
>>Did someone really say that MiNT+NAES is faster than Magic? I've never heard that before. That sounds a bit silly, but...
A Few People have argued blind that its faster, but then again, I argue back that they obviously have NOT seen Magic run!
Yes, NAES2 is manytimes faster than AES4.1, I have not had too much success with OaAESis and XaAES ( however spelled ), but as far as I know, its faster than these two also.
Of course it has much more overheads, which iswhy I am trying to keep things as simple as I can - ie kernal + AES, and thats it! - but even when fully loaded, Magic is a damned sight faster than MiNT.
GEMBENCH: Oh of course, I take many benchmark programs with a whole bucketload of salt, butyou can see the results cant you, not the figures, but the visuals - you can see that there is a definite difference in the performance, but then Ialso take other things into accoun t when comparing speeds - for example, you have several windows open from several programs, and you just try clicking between them - Magic its instant, but MiNT goes funny, and can take seconds to update! - thats a real life test in my books. Look at geneva! - its muchfaster than MiNT, but the screen updates are disgusting.
My Issues:-
Kernal - Yes, 1.15.12 and NAES 2.0
RAM - 2MBST & 32MBTT
Hard Disk Driver:-
HDDriver 7.5 on Real Atari, but only AHDI 5.0 on GEMulator - however, I get the same results whether I use GEMulator or Atari - nothing.
MiNT v Magic : Costs
Yes, agreed, MiNT is free, and Magic is not, I think Magic is priced way too high to be any real competition that way.
What FileSystems can Magic do?
Erm,just TOS/DOS 8+3, Fat16&32(VFAT) - all the ones that Windows does. As far as any others, I do not know.
Yes, I am partial to Magic. v2 was the first time I ever managed to run multitasking on the ST, and I was blown away!
More so because I bought a 40MB HD from a mate, who had deleted the drive, then written a bunch of other stuff, thinking that was all he needed to do, but like the lucky git I am, I still managed to recover most of it, and I got it running. I think it took me about 4 days to get it, and as soon as I saw it go, I realised that this was for me, and I sent off for v3 within 2 weeks.
I got Geneva, but I was not impressed. Ok, its fast, but the windows are far too childish in the way they look, the whole feel is very ( look at my puter daddy ) for me.
I got MultiTOS, after that by luck, I ran it, and was utterly disgusted that Atari had the nerve to release such drivvel. It was at this time, that I saw that a Falcon running MultiTOS, was slower than an ST running Magic.
I want to go for MiNT a lot more, more for the networking really! - Magic has come a hell of a long way in the last couple of years, and its not that far behind MiNT in spite of what many will say - I use Magic networked to the Linux PC and its flawless, and has been for some time.
Keep us updated! Good luck with MiNT! It can be a real pain in the ass to get right sometimes, no matter what anyone says ;-)
Yes, I know.... I will give you any bizz as, and when then.
BTW: Thanks for the impartial info - its good to know someone is open minded enough as you.
