I think you can hold Control down to do it!
What driver do you have? HDDriver allows you to hold down a drive letter as it is booting and it will use that as the driver to boot from (i.e. hold "A" for floppy, "D" for partition D, etc, etc). I have found this to be less than perfect, I think ACCs are still pulled from the HD.
There may be something in the NVRAM but I am unsure.
Is it because your HD falls over when booting?
If it is a game/demo or somthing similar, I did make a program (years back) that could run such disks from GEM (only worked for about 70% of things though), run the app from GEM, insert disk and press a key.
