I know MPx would be very hard in realtime, but I was thinking more along the lines of ICE or LZH format, I will try some samples and see what the results are.

As for the 2:1 that is probably 16 - 8 bit conversion or half sample rate or mono, no?

Looking over the web sites listed in the other posts (thanks for those), it looks to be a little complicated, this could take time.
