I can think of 2 ways of solving this.
First, it should work if you use a GIF as a background picture with a transparent colour 0 and then set the background colour in HTML to the colour you like.
Should work.
Another idea would be to toy around with the HTML code and change the RGB values to a point where it matches the background.
I am not surprised that the GEMview RGB values do not match with those you find out. ;-)
