If you leave the machine switched on without a disk inserted for a couple of minutes it should go to the Desktop. I have known an ST or two not wanting to do anything due to a virus being on a disk that is used when you first switch on.
I know many people leave a disk in, not a good idea for a floppy only user, for hard drive users it speeds up the boot process.
Usually if the ROM's are at fault you get a lovely row of bombs
Does it do unusual things, apart from not going to the desktop, such as flashing screen etc...
Just a thought, have you had it upgraded? was it a half meg (520) and had it made up the one meg (1040) or beyond?
