Both NVDI and SpeedoGDOS handle printing and font functions. However, NVDI was supported for a longer period of time and is thus more full featured regarding the types of fonts available and the printers supported.
NVDI also contains a rewrite of the VDI (video) code, hence its name. Since the new code is faster, your computer appears to be faster despite the fact that the hardware is unchanged. Sort of a 'software accelerator,' so to speak.
In general, NDVI is preferred by most Atarians. It has some limitations, however. Some people, particularly those with modern graphic cards or modified systems, use fVDI, a freeware VDI with many video features but no printing features. Since NVDI and fVDI don't get along well, many fVDI users use SpeedoGDOS. In addition, NDVI (particularly versions 2 and 5) can be downright finicky, refusing to work for certain people for no apparent reason.
