gunzip depacked the file aranym-0.0.20.tar.gz just fine so i am clueless about your problem ...
I found out that some tar programs consider the -z flag for decompressing .Z files, NOT for decompressing .GZ files. But a manual gunzip then tar xvf worked just fine.
