It may be because ( god forbid ) its dying?
The Atari machines just dont bomb out without a bloody good reason, they are not a PC, they are solid machines which give years of solid performance.
What could cause it to bomb out?
Well, a couple of thoughts are that maybe somethign is not seated properly on the motherboard? - try opening it up, and making sure that everythign is properly connected, and firmly in place! - maybe heat has caused this... RAM can be the bugger if you are using SIMMS, make sure they are in right.
The PSU maybe going too, so perhaps its worth getting that checked out? - a PC PSU gives out 12v/5v the same as an Atari one, so it might be worth adapting a PC one?
Hey, if nothign else, you can buy a whole tower case and top-of-the-line PC PSU for way less than the price of a refurb ST PSU
Also if it stops the bombs, you will know what it was!
The Floppy!
This could actually be a bomer too, although I seriously doubt it, but maybe there is some kind of loose connection which is giving the read errors, and can crash the machine? - hey, I am clutching at straws here mate!
I also think that if the disk if formatting properly, then you dont have to worry about it being 5k down... Does it do that on all floppies? are you using a program, or GEM to format?
Different programs and different format params give different figures, so are you using the same as you did before?
If the TOS ROMS are dying on you, it may be a good time to think of upgrading your TOS too! - dont fall into the trap of wasting £50 odd quid on the things though! - ask around first, they are dirt cheap, I pcked up a load of them a while back for a fiver a set, and I know that some people are giving them away with other purchases.
If all else fails, just buy an old knackered ST!
Ok, thats something I hope you can use... otherwise, its just not my day again eh?
