There are several reasons why the ST can bomb out during boot and in the midth of programs.
The most popular ones are EPROM- or ROM-chips that have gone lose over the time and now only have vague contact - And the ST likes to bomb out on memory failures.

So i advice you to open the case and firmly push several chips, especially EPROMs and RAM and have a look wether they're all tightly soldered or if you can spot any damages.

If that doesn't change anything, it might indeed be slowly dying.
Anyway, getting a second-hand STE is so cheap and the STE is more fun than the STf, so i recommend to look for a 1040 STE anyway. :-)
