Surly reading duff data from a floppy could give bombs.
I have a drive once that would format disks and work with them fine, however any disk foormated on another machine simply did not work.
You say you ahve an external drive, maybe you could unplug the internal drive and use the external. It is the only machanical thingin the ST and is the most likely thing the wear out.
