The files you have there, are in the right place. There should be a PRG in the auto folder called mint.prg ( or similar ), so try renaming that to PRX ( or PRG to enable it ) and then see if there is a difference?
MultiTOS is pretty much MiNT, but a very early version - the first version that was GEM anyway.
If it does not work, then there may be something else missing? and I will be happy to provide you with the original MultiTOS Disk if you want it ( I dont, so if you want it, its yours ).
Keep hold of the AES 4.1 file ( GEM.SYS ) and rename it, because if you install MultiTOS, it writes its own, which is AES 4.0 and obviously 4.1 is a little better.
to surf the net, MiNT or Magic is not vital, but I doubt anyone would suggest you dont use them, so the answer really is yes.
Personally I would suggest going for Magic as I am not really a MiNT fan, however, MiNT has plenty going for it, and has support coming from everywhere, so if you have any troubles, you know that help is just round the corner.
Also a big issue is that Magic is commercial and costs, while MiNT is free.
