The hassle will be a lot, but I can imagine that with some an added tv tuner to SAM (Silicon Animation Machine, an old ST greyscale digitizer which ran in 16 cols in full speed in 320*200), it could be done.
Add a compostie video tuner in front of the digitizer, and control the channel settings with a serial port.
And yes, you could grab the screen then, and small animations at any time.
Actually, my SAM is broken (it only displays a little grey cube in the center of the screen) , but if anybody wants to have it, and knows how to fix it, feel free to write.
