Hmmm ... IIRC the external connector only carries a reduced set of signals but i could easily be wrong there, i never really worked on those things.
I guess the basic informations to start with can be gathered from Michael Ruge's chips'n chips documentation, the rest might be extracted from the ST Profi-Book.
Talked to some guys on IRC yesterday and it is about 90% sure that an ST that has an internal diskdrive (STf) will never identify an external one as A:.
So, the external floppy connector is most probably no good and it's the internal Shugart bus instead ...
