I am afraid that does not hold anymore. By the time the Falcon was released i guess SCSI was generally faster than IDE drives.
But by now i am pretty sure that IDE is at least not slower than SCSI on the Falcon.
While IDE is only limited by the memory/bus access of the machine (which is already slow enough on the Falcon), SCSI is also limited by the controller - and the Falcon's SCSI system is not really fast. Just about fast enough for hard-disk recording but then really operating on its limit.
Besides that, IDE is easy to speed up by installing a Bus-speeder while SCSI in the Falcon hardly benefits from that.
Some values for what transfer rates you
usually get with a few Atari machines:
- Atari TT (old): up to 2.4 MB/sec
- Atari Falcon (IDE) : around 2.0 MB/sec
- Atari Falcon (SCSI): around 1.8 MB/sec
- Atari MegaSTE(SCSI): below 1.2 MB/sec
- Hard&Soft SCSI HA: around 1.4 MB/sec
Those are of course only vague values. Please don't mail me if your system is faster. ;-)
(Those are real transfer-rates based on the BIOS as Hard&Soft SCSI tools gives them out. CHECKHD and RateIt will give higher values).
