I have a suggestion:
Insert a disk, switch on your Falcon and keep ALT pressed. If the Falcon boots fine from disk and can access it without problems, it's indeed HDX that screws up your floppy support.
If not, it is a hardware issue (more likely) and you should get a replacement drive.
In contrast to what FatRakoon says you can NOT use any diskdrive to replace the one in the Falcon. The diskdrive you use MUST have an ID-Jumper, otherwise it will not work correctly on your Falcon.
