The hardware upgrade was only for the ST, I believe this is because the STEs shifter chip is built into a custom chip with a number of other things (MMU, etc). Because of this is the lines can not be interupted by hardware.
As the other chap mentioned the software version is you best bet, it can use virtual screens and interlaced, you can get 640x400x4 which works well, 320x400x16 is a bit hard on the eyes and 640x800x2 is small (may look good on bic mono monitor). I forget the name though.
