That's what Apple did when they switched to Power PC chips. Also as far as speed of the new machine is concerned as far as I know the coldfire chip will be socketed to allow faster replacements. Mint though, not so sure about that. There's some nice software but it's too speccy for the average user to get their head round. That's what really ruined the Milan for me. NAES only in German and difficult to twiddle with and that horrible Mint config file. Trying to get it working at full wack was hard stuff, and it made those GDOS configurations for the ST all those years ago look like childs play.
