First of all, how can you say that the Coldfire is a slow chip? It's not slow, it's really not to bad. I think they're clocked up to 333MHz right now, but the MIPS rating is almost twice the 68060, I beleive. And unsupported? What are you talking about? The Coldfire is a modern chip that is still in development by Motorola. In fact, the xTOS was actually waiting for the next processor core to be slated for release later this year, although they went with currently available models. The chip is heavily supported by Motorola and other companies. Furthermore, the Coldfire contains an almost complete set of 68k instructions. They need to emulate only a few instructions (like 4 or 5) to run native Atari software. Native, not emulated. Intel alternative must emulate the enitre 68k instruction set. But the DSP card will give the machine its unbelievable speed. I can't remember which DSP they chose, but it's very fast. There is only one emulator that is even beginning DSP emulation (Aranym, right?) and that will be slower than all hell emulating a DSP and a CPU on the same PC processor.
You're still missing the point of the emulator running on the xTOS. It is meant only to support poorly written games from the '80s and early '90s that don't even run on machines Atari built. GEM, MiNT, TOS, and all that good crap will run natively on the xTOS, unlike on the PC. The emulator is there for people who want to play with 1040STf demos made in 1987 that don't even work on Atari TT's and Falcon's.
An emulator running on a 3GHz Pentium will get creamed by an XTOS with 333MHz CPU and DSP when both are running computationally intensive software, especially sound processing. Remember, clock speed is a poor measure of system speed. A 2GHz Pentium might be fast, but it will get destroyed by a 1Ghz Compaq Alpha chip.
If we all relied on emulators and not hardware, I don't think the Atari community would see even one more commercial product.
