Have a look at Aranym. They are making a TOS compatible virtual machine. It emulates a 68040-ish processor. The rest is supposed to be native, with MiNT device drivers instead of emulation.

We use a low-spec Coldfire at 66mhz/16bit at work, the speed is somewhere around a P75. (In a way faster than most current atari clones - but this is a very bad comparison, the rest of the hardware is not counted for.)
A 333mhz higher-spec 32bit Coldfire would be very fast. Twice the bus width, 5 times the clockfrequency. This is _fast_.
The coldfire needs emulation for a couple of instructions, but if you compile Quake with Coldfire friendly instructions, no emulation is needed.

There is a big difference between compilation and recompilation.
The point with using a Coldfire is that no recompilation is needed. "Just" some emulation for seldom used instructions, that can be avoided with suitable compiler options.
For PowerPC, you need to emulate just about everything. This is a lot harder, but it can be fast as hell with JIT, for example
