The Coldifre is still in development by Motorola. It is a succesful embedded computing chip, although the XTOS will be about the first desktop based on it. Motorola's embedded chip operations are about the only ones that still turn a profit, so I think we can look forward to seeing the Coldfire line continue for a while. It's future seems at least as certain as the unprofitable PowerPC, but probably more so.
The point of the Coldfire use over the PowerPC is that recompilation is _not_ necessary. It can be done to take advantage of some Coldfire-specific features, but, in general, 680x0 code can be directly run on it. PowerPC does need emulation torun 680x0 code. So you're right, if everything were recompiled, the PowerPC would be faster, but that would be very difficult, especially with the heavy use of assembly programming in the Atari community. I think the largest thing holding the Atari line back from a major shift to another CPU type are the OSes (MiNT, Magic, and even TOS) which make heavy use of assembly routines in their source code, making them very difficult to port to other architectures. But these OSes should (theoretically) run fine on top of a Coldfire CPU without emulation.

There is still ofcourse problems with timing dependent games and self-modifying demo coding, but those problems exists even for the Coldfire, so I don't see that there is much difference or much greater effort to go to the PowerPC instead of Coldfire ?
