Shane,

I agree with your post completely this time! I wouldn't mind a PC that booted directly into TOS/MiNT/Jinnee. But the point is that all the current emulators run in an X window or through Microsoft Windows. I think many people would go for a system that booted directly into TOS regardless of underlying hardware.

Your plan is exactly what the Aranym emulator seeks to do. Go see aranym.atari.org. They are emulating a full 68040 CPU with MMU and they plan on implementing an emulated DSP also! The system currently runs on top of Linux (and Windows maybe), but the final goal is to have a mini-Linux distribution that simply starts the emulator directly (no logging into Linux or using X windows). This way, Linux handles all the direct hardware interfaces with up-to-date drivers and TOS simply sits on top. But the appealing thing about this emulator is that the underlying OS is completely transparent. The user has absolutely no idea that Linux is somewhere underneath.

I think a lot of people would go for this because it's kind of a quasi-emulation. Actually, the vdi they';re using is a direct port of fVDI to PC hardware running natively on x86 chips, meaning that the video is actually not emulated at all!
