If you are limited to 4 mb, you could also try to dig up a copy of Geneva. It won't allow preemptive multitasking, but instead act like a multitasking AES on top of a singletasking OS, turning such a setup into a cooperative multitasking environment. Much like a GEM program under singletos can be used next to an open accessory. This solution will leave a good deal of RAM free left for apps to use.
That said, you can also run Geneva on top of MiNT to achive real multitasking, but if you want to have MiNT kernel involved I would definitely recommend N.AES over Geneva.
