Sounds like either the harddiskdriver is broken or that there is some auto program crashing. I would recomend booting from floppy (hold alt during boot) and run the harddisk driver from floppy and see if you can access the harddisk after.

I'm not entierly sure that the oldest toses can bypass harddisk-boot with alt though..
