The Mega STE and TT OEM hard disks were chunky Seagate units, which are full-height. I've got a Quantum Maverick 540S in my Mega STE, this is only an inch high and thus has plenty of headroom. However, I did cut short and re-crimp the Atari-supplied SCSI cable. This is more likely to be the cause of the HDD lid not going back on (due to the cable having to be squashed up and folded upon itself - add that to the SCSI host adaptor and you have a very tight fit) because if the hard disk mechanism itself was too high, its mounting holes would not line up with the holes in the bracket anyway.
