It'll be a lot cheaper to buy a used Mega ST 4 than upgrading your STFM.
HD Floppy requires usually a 16 MHz clock, a new DMA controller and for comfortable use a TOS upgrade to TOS 2.06 as well.
Will most probably cost 60 EURO upwards.
A hard-drive will require a hostadapter. Internally, IDE would be the easiest choice, but a 3.5" harddisk will not fit into a 520/1040 STFM. Mario Becroft does IDE controllers for Mega STs and there is enough room for an internal 3.5" harddisk in a Mega ST as well. Would also require TOS 2.06 to boot from it.
If you want to go external, you need a SCSI hostadapter. Best ones are Link'97 from WB System.
Don't know much about networking devices. There is the Panther ISA-adapter for the Mega ST which lets you drive an ISA-network card.
Perhaps a good solution for a Mega ST.
