I concur, if the machine is an "F" then it is an early ST and will be hard work to upgrade, there was a chap selling a 4mb STE in a case with hard disk and CDROM for about 300 pounds (maybe you do not want to spend that much).
Put a free ad in Micro Mart, you may pick one up for cheap, saying that there was an advert for 4 MB RAM, it did not say if it was for an STE or F or FM, etc but it was only £15.
IF you are not good a soldering then definitely go down the STE route as early STs needed some work, also if you are into music then the STE is much more qualified to do it.
