Wow! I didn't expect a discussion like this!
Anyway, let me clear up what I meant by TOS being able to cooperatively multitask: a while back (like a few years ago) someone "in the know", although I forget who, told me that while GEM is incapable of multitasking, TOS itself is, and you can conceivably write TOS programs and multitask them as long as you don't use GEM. You'd of course have to have a CLI that AUTO boots and bypasses GEM, and is capable of task switching. And of course, I personally wouldn't see much use of this type of technique, but theoretically it is possible. This is why Geneva can work the way it does. It bypasses GEM and uses TOS's internal multitasking abilities, and adds its own GUI on top of that.
