Gemulator is downloadable on its makers' site, and it works on a PC without any additional hardware.
But I've tried it (in Wine/Linux instead of Windows, true, but it's the same). I've also tried numerous other emulators. Here's my opinion:
- Gemulator is very *big* (disk space) for what it is. It has less capability and compatibility than many other emulators.
- Pacifist used to be the reference. Now, you're better along with one of the following.
- Steem (XSteem in my case) is *very* capable. Probably the best option if you want maximum compatibility.
- Stew (in Wine/Linux in my case) is also very good. It has good compatibility. The second best I'd say.
- STonX is not as compatible as far as games are concerned. But it is good enough for well-writen GEM application. More over, STonX is able to run any resolution (eg. 800x600) in full colors (for a ST, that is: 16 colors among 512, or is it 4096?). That's very cool, though some old apps may not like it. I know there is a DOS port of STonX, maybe called STonDOS, don't know, I never tried.
- Hatari is based on Stew+UAE. It is too young to be compared to the others. It shows promises. Wait'n'see.
To conclude, I advise the following:
- games, non-GEM and old apps: Steem or Stew
- pure-GEM and "recent" apps: STonX
As you probably already understood, I'm a Linux user. I hope my advice will nevertheless be of some use.
Yves.
