The controls that are correct to use for that particular game is the Driving Controllers. Like the "paddle" controllers, they both look the same but the driving controllers turn 360' continuously, while the paddle controllers turn 360' once. The paddle controllers only work with games like breakout, Pong Sports, Warlords, ect. You will be able to tell the difference between the controllers looking on the paddles, the driving controllers have 2 checker flags printed on it while the paddle controllers have 2 tennis raquets printed on them. Now as for the date on that cartridge, you must remember that in 1986 when they came back with the 2600, they also remanufactured many of the old games and printed them on new labels with their original pictures ( quite a few on the silver labels) but dated them when they were being reproduced (example: Realsports Volleyball c1982 but reproduced in 1986 so the date would show c1986). Using the joysticks do have a small effect on all Indy 500 games, that is just an effect on the car while trying to use the joystick as a driving controller. Also some of the games that were reproduced like Super Breakout as a big example did have "Use with joystick controllers" printed on the cartridge, but that was a manufacturer error and isn't uncommon to find on the later versions of the older classics like Indy 500.
