1. You start ahdi from floppy
2. You format/partion the disk
3. You install ahdi to the harddisk
It is now ready and self-booting.
AHDI is ataris harddiskdriver. It's not very good, rather slow and lacks alot of features other commercial drivers offer.
I don't have an URL handy for the AHDI package as of now, but I'm sure if you dig a bit into google you will find it.
Otherwise you can try the HDDRIVER demo, it's a commercial program but the demo works as well (some annoying keypress at startup and I think some other limits as well).
