If the STE already identifies the drive, you're almost there. First, you don't need to format a disk anymore. Just partition it and usually, the disk will be accessible.
Some HD-utility packages require you to "initialize" a partition as boot-partition,
otherwise the STE won't find the driver.
Also, remember that the STE won't be capable of going beyond 512MB partitions and depending on the TOS of your system, maybe even less.
