Yes, of course there are several ways to "modernise"
your ST. However, they're not cheap and a 520 STfm
is probably not the best platform to start with.
a.) You should get a RAM upgrade. Half a megabyte
will not perform well with any other upgrade. And the
520/1040 STfm are hard to expand.
b.) You should get a harddisk. A disk drive will not get
you very far with other fancy hardware. A 520/1040 will
require some sort of external adapter, usually SCSI. There
is also a Compact Flash to IDE adapter, but that would
require an internal IDE adapter. There's Satandisk, which
seems to be shipping, which may be an option.
c.) You should consider upgrading the operating system,
it's an option and not a must but definetly recommended.
Again, a 520/1040 requires additional hardware to run
TOS 2.06 so it's costing extra.
d.) If you're into networking, there's two options. The
cheapest is to run a Null-Modem connection via serial
to your PC. It's cheap and good enough to copy files
from the PC to your ST. The other way would be to
acquire an EtherNec or a NetUSB (under development ?).
I agree it's quite a list and if you just want to play ST
games on an original ST, you should stick to copying
files to DD disks on your PC and use them on your ST
because the effort described above is not worth it.
No offense intended, just being honest.
