There is a problem with formatting HD disks in DD drives, in that it takes a stronger EMF field to change the domains on the disk surface. The result is the signal strength on the disk is lesser and you can get read errors.
Having said that, I've never had any problems, and they're OK for short term storage. Staples in the UK can still supply DSDD floppies relatively inexpensively.
