It does not have anything to do with your problem but don't ever use the LineA functions!
The VDI is not only easier to use (well, at least if you use the C bindings), it will also work on all machines. Any possible speed difference is not worth worrying about.
Anyway, "Intermediate file error" normally means that the device where the quad file (intermediate compilation data) is stored is full.
IIRC, you can change where those files are put using the dialog you get to via the 'Environment' menu item.
