What kind of programming do you want to do specifically, Games? OS? Applications? There are many programming languages for the atari. Some are easy to use and powerful (like Basic XE), and others will compile programs to run fastest (Assembly, or Action!).

There are many books and manuals on the net. A starting point is http://www.atariarchives.org
