1) Most recent computers (even with 5.25 floppy drives) cannot write a disk that the 1050 can read; thus you will require some hardware such as an SIO2PC cable or modem or nul modem cable and software for transfer to the Atari system.
2) The XL monitor out produces an audio feed and a composite video signal suitable for a TV, VCR or other peripheral of that ilk; you will require a converter similar to the 'Cheese Box' (which I have not seen advertised lately) to drive a semi-modern VGA monitor. I have yet to find an adapter for the current flat panel displays.
