Yes, this is already a reality. I suppose these types of interactions are "easier" to emulate or virtualize.
Emulation of full capabilities of the Atari 8-bit computer's graphics and sound seems to be what is more difficult. Though I propose this is not impossible with today's technology.
Another thing the Atari 8-bit emulator cannot handle yet are the multiple terminal programs which allow a real 8-bit to communicate with the outside world.
To me any 8-bit emulator that can't do these things is not yet a capable emulator. Again, I'm now willing to help complete the 8-bit emulator if it takes money.. contact me.
