Sounds like a broken wire on the back of the bw/color switch, or a broken trace or solder joint somewhere between the video chip and the RF output.

I'm not familar enough with the 2600's video chip. If it puts out chroma and luminance like the GTIA in the 800XL then the chroma signal could be interupted and you'd still get a full picture, just in black and white.

If the video chip only puts out a composite signal, that is then changed to RF, then the chip itself is most likely going bad.

Same for the Woody. An RF modulator takes the video signal(s) (either chroma & luminance or composite) and the audio signal, combines them and changes them into a TV signal. If any line does not reach the modulator it doesn't get included in the TV signal.

Either way any good TV repair shop should be able to figure out whats going on.
