Well, my five year old likes:

Checkered Flag
Rampage
Lemmings (no kidding!)
California Games (the BMX part)
Battlezone 2000

Occasionally he plays:

Battlewheels (a bit gory)
Warbirds (rather hard)
Joust (rather hard)
Roadblaster
Super Asteroids

I'd recommend Checkered Flag as a first game (my son started with that one at the age of 3). Close supervision is recommended, as it takes a year or so to sink in that you can't drop the Lynx on the floor! As an added bonus, my children prefer it if I play comlynxed but as an assistant, not an enemy.
