Worth noting in case anyone else has a similar problem that GEM has now been opensourced (http://www.deltasoft.com/ and http://www.seasip.info/Gem/), whilst FreeDOS gives a modern but very compatible DOS. This would be a good way to get the most out of an Atari PC whilst keeping it quite "authentic" to the original :)
