I remember a similar problem as described by Zaphod on 'Dragonriders of Pern'. If you wished player one to use the joystick in port 1 (stick0) then player two would automatically have to use port 3. No good if you had an XL!
Anyway, I did manage to fix this and it's on AURA #30 which can be downloaded from Mr.Bacardi's great site:
