There is a new word processor currently currently being developed for the Atari 8bits called "The Last Word." You can download it from http://atari8.co.uk

As for BASIC compilers, I would recommend running Turbo Basic XL and using its compiler. It doesn't produce stand-alone executeables, but if you include the runtime as an AUTORUN.SYS and rename your compiled basic program AUTORUN.CTB then it'll autoboot.
