If your ST has TOS version 1.4 or greater, any disk you format from the desktop is compatible with MS-DOS. The disk will appear perfectly normal to a PC. This works the other way around too - FORMAT A: /F:720 /U will format a disk that can be read from your atari - it seems to work on my TOS 1.2 Mega 2 but there will be a few files that appear that don't seem to do anything. Also, if you format a disk on the PC and give it a volume label, the volume label will appear as a file under GEMDOS. This is quite normal, but you won't be able to delete this file (nor should you try). DCformat and Fcopy Pro will format MS-DOS disks if you have TOS 0.9/1.0/1.2.
Good luck :)
