In the case of the E. T. cartridge - if the ROM were damaged rendering the game unplayable, how would one tell?
The game itself is very interesting... it went well beyond the design spec of the Stella chipset, it laughed in the face of the systems limitations with huge, detailed multicolour sprites... if they'd had a bit longer to polish the gameplay, it could have been amazing.
Surely some of the cartridges survived? They buried millions of them! I think they're probably the higher quality cartridges with the retracting protective cover rather than the cost-reduced later carts that only had the pins to push back the cover over the ROM socket (did later 2600s have this? I have a heavy sixer, I've never seen a four switch or Darth 2600, and I've never examined a 2600jr).
