It wouldn't be possible to display special ST effects on a 256 colour display unfortunately, it would require perfect synchronisation between the emulated ST CPU and the PC video card, that isn't ever going to happen. That is really the only reason why we don't encourage everyone to use 256 colours, if you get a screen with special effects Steem slows to a crawl and the screen will look a mess. For mono and extended monitor modes 256 colours is a great idea, speeds things up a lot.
