Subject: RE: Atari falcon scsi problem

I've seen you've tried several drives and cables, so let's start with some basic common problems with using SCSI on Ataris.

The first question I would ask is have you terminated the SCSI bus correctly? If not, it could be causing your problems.

If the drive is in an enclosure with a 50 pin terminator block on the back AND set on the drive itself using SCSI TERMINATOR jumper, you could be seeing problems. Alternatively, there may be no termination at all. The Falcon does not require termination at both ends of the cable. At the Falcon end, it is internally terminated.

Secondly, many connectors are not keyed and so it is possible to insert the cable the wrong way around by accident. I'm not suggesting you've done this, but it's a common mistake.

HxC 2001 is for the Shugart or the PC bus derived from it, it's not IDE. It is designed to mimic (emulate a 720kb/1.44Mb floppy drive). It won't help you here any more than a FDD. It let's you select FDD images to act like a FDD. It appears great for that purpose and I've ordered one recently for my ST.

It's worth having a serial link to your Falcon. Get yourself a USB->Serial convertor for your PC/Mac. Versions based on the Prolific IC are usually inexpensive. There are plenty of free terminal programs for the Atari. It may help you out in the event of other transfer problems.

Alternatively, get yourself an SD card reader for the Falcon's 2.5" bus. You will need to disconnect the compact flash reader and may need to change the Master/Slave jumper on your hard drive, as the one below doesn't appear to have that jumper and will act as master. CompactFlash is faster as it is a native IDE implementation on it's bus, however SD cards are much cheaper.

To take this path, you will need to reconfigure HD Driver to boot your hard drive off the slave. Pulling the lid on the Falcon is straightforward. The most important thing to take care of when adding/removing devices to the 2.5 ide bus cable is avoiding damage to device pins and static discharges. Something like this one available from Ireland should work ok: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Secure-Digital-44-Pin-44PIN-2-5-Male-IDE-SD-Card-Adapter-Amiga-600-1200-/110887386367?pt=UK_VintageComputing_RL&hash=item19d1673cff

I have several different devices of this type, including one low cost one with a master/slave switch which I purchased from Taiwan, but they don't seem to be on ebay now. I have a 16GB card in a similar device connected to my Hades 060. The downside is these readers are not hot swappable, so you need to power off between card insertions/removals. You could cut a slot in the back of your Falcon case to allow the SD cards to be installed and removed easily. IIRC, you will face PC/TOS formatting limitations in order to use it between operating systems, but it should still be ample to move data to your Falcon's hard drive.
